Foo Fighters new drummer is not permanent?

Dave Grohl announced that Ilan Rubin is drumming for Foo Fighters ‘for now’ live at the band’s concert in San Luis Obispo on Saturday, suggesting that he is a touring drummer, and is not permanently hired. This comes after Josh Freese was hired as permanent drummer in 2023, and then fired this year. Rubin left Nine Inch Nails for Foo Fighters, while Freese returned to NIN.

Foo Fighters fans like new drummer Ilan Rubin BETTER than Josh Freese.

Some Foo Fighters fans are discussing their preference for Foos’ new drummer Ilan Rubin on Reddit, despite their respect for Josh Freese.

“I don’t know what it is exactly, but I feel like Ilan is a much better fit than Josh was. No shade meant towards Josh, but there was something about his style that just felt off to me even from the very first intro. Like Josh was a bit too heavy-handed for the Foo’s style.

It was a long road to almost ruin, but they look like they’re learning to walk again!”

Another fan wrote, “I had always felt like something was missing with Josh, but my biggest takeaway from the whole firing saga is that he didn’t actually enjoy the music he was playing. He probably had a hundred reasons to take the gig and the actual music wasn’t one of them.

It always makes a hell of a difference for live shows when musicians actually enjoy what they are doing.”
