Late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury’s life has come back into focus with the release of the Bohemian Rhapsody film, and a recent World Magazine article explored the iconic singer’s alleged drug use.
His drug use also rose to epic proportions. At one point in the late 1970s, Mercury’s drug purchases reached 7,000 British pounds per week. That was the equivalent of about $15,000, or about $45,000 in 2018 dollars. Every week.
These details are also conveniently omitted from Bohemian Rhapsody.
The Atlantic described a reported cocaine party Mercury had in 1978.
At a 1978 launch party for Queen’s album Jazz, Freddie Mercury furnished a New Orleans hotel with nude waiters, snake charmers, and—according to rumor—trays of cocaine. For Mercury’s birthday in 1987, the singer drew 700 friends to Ibiza for a soiree that’s still commemorated annually on the island. At another birthday, in 1985 at a bar in Munich, he asked his guests to dress in black-and-white drag while he caroused in harlequin pants, generalissimo tassels, and no shirt. You can watch the footage, and you can wish you were there.
Brian May wrote on Instagram on Friday, “Good Morning folks ! I am a new man ! Yesterday smashed my #blues to bits ! So here’s one more pic from yesterday – taken by DENIS DENIS (he’s always referred to in stereo these days) with his new experimental double Canon stereo rig. What do you think ? I thought I’d hit you with the cross-eyed view first, this time. Those of you who prefer parallel viewing (like me), or use a stereoscope, please swipe once.
Another swipe will take you to the Mono (flat) view, and the last picture Shows that this book is even more special than usual! Yes, it’s the Korean edition of Queen in 3-D, due to be published in a couple of months time. I’m very excited. That’s a first for me. Many thanks for my new favourite shirt Lynn Nakayama ! Today I have donned something perhaps equally arresting ! May today bring you new dreams !! Bri.”
