Gene Simmons from KISS recently made an appearance on The Fighter and The Kid podcast. Hosts Bryan Calen and Brendan Schaub brought the topic of Beatles. At one point they were talking about Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant wearing groupies’ clothes, and also Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page. Simmons claimed that Robert Plant used to wear shirts of the girls he dated.
When it comes to legendary rock bands, few have a reputation as wild and untamed as Led Zeppelin. The band also became infamous for their escapades offstage, particularly their interactions with groupies. While their musical genius is undeniable, Led Zeppelin’s legacy includes stories of controversy, and moments that still spark debates today. The infamous ‘Mud Shark Incident’ of Led Zeppelin remains to be one of the most notorious chapters in rock music history.
Jimmy Page (founder and lead guitarist), Robert Plant (lead singer), John Paul Jones (bassist and keyboardist), John Bonham (drummer), and their road manager Richard Cole stayed in the Edgewater Inn after the gig.
The specific hotel is worth noting because, sitting atop Puget Sound, it’s known for the fact that guests can fish directly from the windows of their rooms. Maybe you can see where this is going.
As the story goes, some or all of the members of Led Zeppelin and a band called Vanilla Fudge (with whom Zeppelin was playing at the festival) pleasured a groupie with a mud shark and filmed the encounter. Over the years, many have written off the salacious rumour as entirely made up, while others insist it’s just too bizarre to be fiction.
