Green Day Audio Cut Sparks NBC Censorship Claims at Super Bowl
NBC is facing online backlash after viewers accused the network of censoring Green Day during the Super Bowl LX introduction show in Santa Clara, where the band performed a short medley tied to their 2005 album American Idiot.
During “American Idiot,” Breitbart reported that the band appeared to sing the lyric “the subliminal mind-fuck America” as written, but that NBC’s censors garbled the audio so it was not heard clearly on the broadcast.
The report also noted that the performance did not include the altered “MAGA agenda” line the group has used in the past, and that The Hollywood Reporter said it reached out to NBC Sports for comment.
Green Day’s set landed in an already politically charged weekend for the band, which has recently made headlines after calling out ICE at a concert during a separate live appearance.
Fans continued to debate the broadcast cut on social media, with some suggesting the network muted portions of multiple songs, while others questioned what the moment signalled about standards for live music during the NFL’s biggest telecast of the year.
