Green Day have made their political stance quite clear and this led to a ton of controversy recently. That’s why 5 Republicans blasted them yesterday.
Billie Joe Armstrong, the lead singer of Green Day, has come under criticism for holding up a Donald Trump mask during a recent concert in Washington DC. This incident happened just a few weeks after there was an assassination attempt on the former president. At the concert, which took place at Nationals Park, Armstrong displayed a mask with the word “idiot” written on its forehead. This act has gained a lot of attention on social media, with many drawing comparisons to a controversial 2017 video by Kathy Griffin, where she held up a mock severed head of Trump.
During the same concert, Armstrong also changed the lyrics of Green Day’s popular song “American Idiot” to say “I’m not a part of a MAGA agenda.” This lyric change was similar to one he made earlier during ABC’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. Green Day has also publicly supported Kamala Harris, adding to the political context of their recent performances and actions.
As seen on the Green Day subreddit, following the backlash the band got from Republicans, they released a new ‘Nimrod’ t-shirt featuring Donald Trump, as they kept the trolling going. A lot of fans on the Reddit thread also had a field day with the t-shirt for good reason since the shirt insulted Donald Trump fans in a big way.
