Garbage recently canceled their remaining shows in 2024 after frontman Shirley Manson suffered an injury. This has led to speculation from fans.
In an X post on August 2nd, the icon shared the message on behalf of the band on their account. It has been noted that Manson’s injury would “require surgery and rehabilitation to correct” and that the decision was not “taken lightly”.
“No one is more crushed about this than I am. You know I would push through if I could,” Manson wrote in the post’s caption. In the statement, the band also clarified that they will be back on the road in 2025.

Well-wishes poured in from the fans and her musician peers like The Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan, Sharon van Etten, Kathleen Hanna, Silversun Pickups, and actresses Traci Lords and Rosanna Arquette. “I really hope the surgery goes well and people sneak you in some decent food!” wrote Hanna.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first injury Manson sustained while on tour. In 2016, Manson fell off a stage during a Garbage set in Los Angeles. She underwent hip replacement surgery last year to address it.
Is it the end of Garbage?
After every show on Garbage’s current tour, Shirley Manson has bid farewell to the city she’s in. It is because she doesn’t know if she’ll ever play there again. The frontwoman has been one of rock music’s most active performers for over 30 years. However, the Edinburgh native is aware of the passing of time.
“Life is so precious,” she says, speaking from her band’s latest stop in Barcelona.
“The older I get the more I enjoy life, I understand time is running out on me and it has allowed me to enjoy a sense of urgency, to harness it and put into my work. I don’t know how much longer we can go on and do this.
“I’m the youngest member of the band and I’m turning 58 in a couple of weeks. So we are just enjoying every moment right now.”
That does not mean Garbage are riding off in the sunset just yet though. The quartet – Shirley, Butch Vig, Duke Erikson and Steve Marker previously said that they intend to bring out a new album next year. However, with Manson sidelined with the injury, it raises concern about the band’s future.
