Jerry Cantrell Covers “Black Hole Sun” For Chris Cornell At Rock Hall of Fame

Alice In Chains singer/guitarist Jerry Cantrell and Heart’s Ann Wilson paid tribute to late Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell at the 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Saturday night, covering “Black Hole Sun.” Watch video of the performance below.

Cantrell said, “Chris was a friend for many years, an incredible artist, a wonderful human being. I’ve always been inspired by his work ethic and talent, and his band Soundgarden they were a big influence on us. It’s obviously very sad, I still don’t really know how to discuss it personally, but I think at this point it’s time to maybe focus on the type of man that he was, and the type of human being, and the type of artist.

Incredible depth, our bands helped each other in the early days, we were all under the same roof with Susan Silver managing them, Kelly Curtis managing Mother Love Bone and then Pearl Jam, and they jointly managed us. We were all in the same law office over the central tavern, and that was the home base. I’m going to miss him immensely, but I also celebrate his life and his life’s work.”

He added, “Ann called me and said she was thinking about doing something for our friend, and asked me if I would join her. Anytime she calls I’m there, and if it’s for Chris of course, absolutely.”

Beautiful tribute to honor Chris Cornell. I was choked up watching it. Thank you AN for putting this up.

Chris deserves to have this type of recognition, one that focuses on his life as a talented, brilliant, musician.

Ann Wilson and Jerry Cantrell, I tip my hat to you for keeping it real.

It’s too bad they couldn’t have launched a tribute with one of the better Soundgarden songs.

Yet another slap in the face of SG, which will hopefully not show up when the Hall finally “honours” them.

Not sure they ever will get around to “honoring” them. Both SG and AIC have been eligible for several years.

I hope SG just doesn’t show. Someone could induct them, but it’s too late. Its not the same but it kind of reminds me what happened to the E Street Band. They inducted them too late, a couple members were already dead, and there’s a bitterness that will never go away for them. It shouldn’t. Same here. SG, and I’m not the biggest fan of theirs ever though a big one, should’ve been in already.

        Alice too but that’s inevitable.

If they were going to do a tribute to Cornell they should’ve done one of his solo songs. Nice sentiment, awful execution and consideration by the RRHoF, which is kind of their MO.

I am so happy that this happened.

This is how Chris should be remembered. And I am very glad that both Ann and Jerry did this for him.

Also, it was a great performance.

Lastly, I think Chris would have loved seeing this.
