Alternative Nation reporter Lauryn Schaffner recently uploaded a video on our YouTube channel discussing Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley to mark the anniversary of their deaths of April 5th.

She said she ranks Nirvana near the bottom of her list of favorite Grunge bands while listing Alice In Chains near the top, “Unpopular opinion, I actually put Nirvana in last. It doesn’t mean I’m undermining Kurt’s talent of influence in any way shape or form. I have spoken to several musicians at this point of my career, and many have said that he’s the reason he either picked up the guitar, or wanted to get into music in the first place. I’m completely aware and I am not denying the influence that he had, but my question is why? Why him, why is he put on this pedestal as opposed to the other musicians from that time?”

She also said she believes Layne’s voice blew away Kurt’s.

“I know Jerry Cantrell co-wrote and wrote many Alice In Chains songs, but Layne’s voice I think blows Kurt’s away. I hear more of a diversification in the sound of the Alice In Chains catalog as opposed to Nirvana.”

“I have just been perplexed by on social media this day every single yet, ‘We lost the greatest musician on this day, Kurt Cobain.’ We also lost Layne!”
