Soundgarden recently took the stage for their long-awaited induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. During the show, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic was spotted in attendance as he cheered for the band’s induction.
Fans were also quick to notice an intriguing connection between Soundgarden and another iconic Seattle band, Nirvana. Just as Nirvana did during their 2014 Hall of Fame induction, Soundgarden celebrated their moment with the help of powerful female vocalists.
Soundgarden and Nirvana had a similar approach
For Nirvana’s induction, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear — invited an all-female lineup of singers to front their performance in tribute to Kurt Cobain. Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, St. Vincent, and Lorde each brought their own energy and interpretation to Nirvana classics, symbolizing the band’s enduring influence and Cobain’s respect for women in music.
This time around, Taylor Momsen, frontwoman of the Pretty Reckless, provided vocals for the emphatic opening song “Rusty Cage.” The singer has performed with Soundgarden’s surviving members in the past. Most memorably, she appeared with them at the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert in 2022.
Brandi Carlile, who performed at the 2019 Cornell tribute concert took over for the next song, delivering an emotional rendition of the 1994 classic “Black Hole Sun.”
After the surviving members of Soundgarden each gave an acceptance speech, Cornell’s younger daughter, Toni was introduced. She was accompanied by Heart’s Nancy Wilson on acoustic guitar, and the 21-year-old singer delivered a heart-wrenching rendition of the band’s 1994 single “Fell on Black Days.”
