In a new episode of Jack Osbourne’s “Tries Not to Die” podcast, Jack and his half-brother Louis Osbourne shared a surprising detail about their father, Ozzy Osbourne. Despite being a rock and metal icon, the late Black Sabbath frontman’s taste in music was more eclectic than fans might expect.
“He didn’t really listen to rock at all,” Louis revealed.
“No,” Jack confirmed. “He would appreciate it. He could understand it. But he was more intrigued with music with really amazing production, and melody.”
Remembering some of his last moments with his father, Louis recalled: “Shortly before he passed away, I was spending time with him and had this little Bose or JBL, little sound attached to his phone. And he’d just play it all the time when he was doodling with his art or working out. I mean, it was like, he listened to things like Tears for Fears and quite a lot of 80s music.”
“He loved music from the ‘80s,” Jack added. “He went through a heavy Michael Jackson phase over the last couple years.”
Louis continued, naming more of Ozzy’s favorite artists.
“I’ll tell you who really, really, really did blow him away when she first came out. Adele,” he said. “He was massively, massively, in awe of her vocal range, her voice, and her singing. He was really quite blown away by it. And Amy Winehouse as well. He rated Amy Winehouse a lot. Of course, in the last 20 years, they’re probably two of the greatest voices, especially to have come out of the UK. So he listened to all kinds of stuff.”
Jack went on to emphasize just how much his father “leaned more towards the melodic stuff” than towards rock.
“He would listen to AC/DC. He would listen to some– Really, actually probably only AC/DC,” Jack said. “[He wouldn’t listen to Iron Maiden]. No. Hell no.”
“Never a Maiden fan,” Louis added.
“Never,” Jack continued. “He would listen– I would hear him listen to Metallica occasionally. […] And Guns N’ Roses. […] Annie Lennox. Loved Annie Lennox.”
