Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready discussed Chris Cornell and Layne Staley’s beautiful collaboration on Alice In Chains’ “Right Turn” recently on Lithium on SiriusXM.
“The next song up is Alice In Chains Right Turn, which is probably my favorite song of theirs. They have I believe Ann Wilson, Mark Arm, and Chris Cornell also singing on this song. That I thought was cool, it was kind indicative of what the Seattle scene was like that people would support each other and play on each other’s records.
That’s why it was so cool to be part of Seattle, because we would all kind of support each other. We were in competition with each other in a way, but we also would support each other, because this is such a small town.”
He also discussed seeing Soundgarden live for the first time.
“The first time I saw them was at the Bumbershoot festival, I forget the date, it was kind of early on, they were playing a smaller room. I caught part of their set, and part of Etta James, I mixed it up.
I just remember this guy completely screaming in this beautiful heavy voice, and the band was shaking the whole room. So ‘Beyond The Wheel’ was played that night, I believe they opened up with it, that’s when I realized Cornell was an incredible singer.”
