Richie Sambora recently broke his long silence on fan criticism, his solo career, and his complicated history with Bon Jovi, engaging in a rare and blunt exchange with fans on X that quickly gained attention.
Richie Sambora responds to fans
The former Bon Jovi guitarist responded after a fan accused him of being ungrateful and dismissive of the band’s fanbase, writing:
“Ahhhh Come on don’t be a little Child. Most BJ Fans did not give my voice a change.
Question which kind of fans stood there at your solotour? Where there new fans who got to know you? Come on get it and dont ‘spit in the hand that still feeds you'”
Sambora pushed back strongly, making it clear he felt personally disrespected while reaffirming his gratitude toward fans of both his solo work and Bon Jovi.
“Please don’t call me a child. I was there, and once again it’s the truth . Of corse there were and are my solo fans. They were great shows because of the fan interaction. I ain’t complaining at all .. I’m eternally grateful. And me I had the most fun. I love my fans. Bj and RS alike. You can be as rude and crass as you like. You just showed the world how adolescent you are. you think I’d bust my ass makin those records and be on the road for 40 years to not appriciate and leave my soul on that stage every nite?? I clear that up for ya?”
Another fan praised Sambora for addressing misinformation directly, prompting a self-aware — and sarcastic — reply from the guitarist.
“See, that’s why it is good when you correct stuff that’s out there & incorrect. We learn from you, the horse’s mouth (not that you’re a horse but you know what I mean I hope). Thank you.”
Sambora replied:
“Yep I’m the horse….ive shut my mouth for to many years but when its completely made up by (some camp) then its up to the fans…actually its not rocket science.if you really listen you’ll know.. hint.. I don’t have to lie.. I do it and love it…”
The conversation then shifted to responsibility for Sambora’s solo sales, with one fan insisting Jon Bon Jovi was not to blame.
“Sorry but you can’t blame Jon for poor sales”
Sambora agreed — up to a point — while offering rare insight into the business realities behind his career decisions.
“I don’t. Jon wanted me in the band back then and corporate wanted me back cause we sold a lot more as a band then either of us did separately.. so I was able to be in one of the biggest bands in the world and make the records I wanted to also. I’ve would have liked to have more time to develop my solo stuff, but my instinct , brains and god told me from the inside the music I made with BJ would have a chance to reach more people. And thank you for being nice enough to insult me. The truth perspective wise is supposed to start healthy debate not start arguments. So I’m zipping it. All my answers won’t be. You may go back to guessing…”
Another fan shared a personal story praising Sambora’s solo work, describing how a Jimi Hendrix fan was impressed by one of Sambora’s covers and unaware it was him.
Sambora responded with perhaps his most revealing comment of the entire exchange:
“People still have no idea I sing write lyrics produce records.. I decided to let the music talk.. not such a bright idea. Most BJ fans didn’t give my voice a chance. It reflects in sales. I’ve accepted it. Of corse Jon and corporate killed my records to get me back to the mother ship…”
Sambora later insulted Jon Bon Jovi’s current singing voice. A fan said, “This is like Ringo telling John Lennon he held him back 😭.”
Richie shot back, “Ringo can play, and then theres a plastic throat. U telling me me thats passable for a high ticket price Jr?”
