Former Deep Purple rocker Ritchie Blackmore recently opened up on Taylor Swift. The guitarist talked about his opinion during an episode of Tales From The Tavern, his ongoing YouTube series, and explained why he isn’t a fan of the singer.
“When the family all get into the truck and we go on a bit of a holiday – which probably is like 20 miles down the road cuz I don’t like to travel – all I hear is Taylor Swift or something,” he said. “I find it hard to relate to that, but it’s not wrong, it’s the new generation wanting to hear that. That’s probably as great to them as The Beatles and Cream and Jimi Hendrix was to me.”
The rocker labeled today’s music ‘crap,’ continuing, “So I can’t really complain, but I do like to complain, and I will complain, and I think the crap that they’re playing on the radio today is bloody awful.”
In the same video, Blackmore explained what kind of music he enjoys listening to. It’s not rock and roll. He revealed that he keeps his passion alive by listening to music from the 15th and 16th centuries before exploring more contemporary sounds.
He parted ways with the band during their 1993 tour, stepping away from the rock genre. He then shifted his focus to Blackmore’s Night, a medieval music project with his wife, Candice Night. Blackmore has remained dedicated to music inspired by the 14th and 15th centuries, and not being into modern-day music affected his own work as well. “I’m not really interested in the modern approach with modern instruments,” Blackmore told Long Island Weekly.
“We use synthesizers on certain things, but they are there to see how we’re going to progress with the other instruments. It’s all about going back to the basics – simple music,” he added.
Blackmore’s 25th Anniversary Edition of ‘Fires At Midnight,’ originally released by Blackmore’s Night in 2001, was released this September.
