Roger Waters ignited fresh debate over his political views this week after a fiery television interview in which he appeared to defend current governments in Venezuela and Iran, while sharply criticizing U.S. foreign policy. Adam Carolla called him ‘Comfortably Dumb.’

Roger Waters feels Islamic Republic was protecting Iranians

Waters, the former Pink Floyd bassist and outspoken social critic, was a guest on Piers Morgan Uncensored this weekend, where the conversation touched on global protest movements and U.S. foreign interference.

During the exchange, Waters reiterated his past defense of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro as the “duly democratically elected leader” of his country — a position widely disputed by international observers who have labeled past elections as lacking credibility.

But the interview took an even more controversial turn when Iran’s ongoing protest movement — sparked by grievances ranging from economic hardship to demands for personal freedoms — came up.

Waters characterized recent deadly clashes between Iranian security forces and protesters as “police protecting ordinary working people” who were then attacked by “armed thugs,” suggesting Western intelligence agencies may have been involved. He dismissed widely accepted evidence of government repression and Iran’s status as a major regional sponsor of armed groups as “nonsense” and “rubbish.”

He also attributed economic pressures inside Iran to broad Western sanctions rather than internal governance failures, and questioned narratives that portray the demonstrations as a popular demand for regime change. Waters was quoted as saying protesters were primarily reacting to inflation and outside interference.
