Rush singer/bassist revealed why Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl was really hanging out with him in Toronto recently, and it had nothing to do with him replacing Neil Peart in Rush, contrary to rumors and wishful thinking.

He told Talkin’ Rock podcast, “Yes, he was [hanging out with me in Toronto]. [Laughs] He’s a fantastic guy, I love those guys, Dave’s a very cool guy, and his mom and my mom have actually become pals. His mom, Virginia, wrote this book about rock moms and she flew up here to meet my mom and they really hit it off. They’ve stayed in touch, so she was up here doing a talk about her book and Dave was interviewing her on stage so they were in town, we all got together, so it was pretty fun.”

The interviewer chimed in, “I’m sure that the 15-year-old Dave Grohl can’t believe that his mom and your mom are friends.”

Lee said, “”It’s pretty unusual, it’s pretty surreal, I have to say to sit there and just laugh about it.”

Dave Grohl last year where he could never replace Neil Peart in Rush.

“I would say, ‘I’m not physically or musically capable, but thanks for the offer.’ Neil Peart, that’s a whole other animal, another species of drummer. I know the arrangements, but I’m like Meg White to Neil Peart. And she’s one of my favorite drummers! She’s my daughter’s favorite drummer, too. My daughter plays drums to two types of music: White Stripes and AC/DC. I’m like, ‘That’s exactly what you need to be doing.'”

Ultimate-Guitar transcribed Lee’s comments from the Talkin’ Rock podcast.
