The Smashing Pumpkins members Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin are working with producer Howard Willing in the studio in Los Angeles. Willing shared photos from the studio, saying that he had just been working with Cheap Trick in Nashville and caught a red eye flight to make it to LA. Jimmy Chamberlin also shared a photo from the studio, calling it his ‘office’ for the next few weeks. Billy Corgan shared a photo of his Big Muff pedal. James Iha and D’arcy Wretzky have not been photographed, but Iha does live in Los Angeles. A reunion of the original lineup has been frequently discussed by Corgan for the last two years since Iha reunited with the Pumpkins onstage in Los Angeles and Chicago for three performances.

Howard Willing produced Smashing Pumpkins’ 2014 album Monuments to an Elegy, which featured Tommy Lee on drums. He also was producing the followup Day For Night, before Billy Corgan abandoned the album midway through in 2015. Willing’s relationship to the Pumpkins goes back to the 90’s, as he served as an engineer on Adore and MACHINA/The Machines of God.

Willing also produced Corgan’s solo album recording sessions last month in Nashville for the followup to Ogilala. Corgan claimed that the album’s recording was done after the sessions, outside of overdubs and possibly one new song that would be recorded as he goes to finish up in Nashville likely in February. Corgan described that album as raw and stripped down, so it’s highly unlikely that the current Los Angeles recording sessions have anything to do with that album. Corgan did discuss having an interest in re-recording some unreleased Zwan era tracks last month, but he never followed up with any concrete plans and a recent Instagram post indicates that new material is being worked on. A fan claimed a couple of months ago he overheard Jimmy Chamberlin telling someone at a drum clinic that the original Smashing Pumpkins lineup would reunite to record a new album in 2018.

A new photo was also released today of Corgan and Chamberlin working on a song. Corgan wrote on Instagram, “Ye olde pros… Still looking for the lost chord @chamberdrums #WPC.”
