Rage Against The Machine and Radiohead are the lone 90’s alternative rock acts nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 2019 class, and fan voting is underway. Def Leppard are crushing the competition, with Stevie Nicks and The Cure in second and third place respectively. Rage Against The Machine are also behind Todd Rundgren, The Zombies, Janet Jackson, Devo, and Radiohead. RATM are beating Roxy Music, LL Cool J, John Prine, Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, Kraftwerk, and MC5.
Tom Morello has reacted to RATM failing to get near the top by calling on fans to get out and vote. He tweeted a photo of the current vote numbers and said, “Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame fan vote current standings. Calling all #RATM fans? Go to http://rockhall.com.”
Former Audioslave and Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello discussed Chris Cornell’s death in a new WAAF interview with Mistress Carrie. Alternative Nation transcribed his comments.
“Of course, through the whole catalog. The way I look at it is, for somebody who wrestled with the demons that Chris wrestled with, the fact that Chris lived to 52 and managed to harness those demons and make some of the greatest rock and roll of all time, I think we as fans are very, very fortunate.”
He also reacted to fans clamoring for Chris Cornell and Soundgarden to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. 2019 nominees were announced on Tuesday, and bands like Soundgarden and Alice In Chains were yet again snubbed, while Rage Against The Machine was nominated.
“I know, I am too. I get to be in the room for some of that, so yeah definitely. Chris either as a solo artist, or Soundgarden as a band, both deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, so hopefully that will happen in the not too distant future.”
He said he was anti-Rock Hall of Fame for years.
“I was writing them constantly because the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was not representing my favorite genre of music. KISS wasn’t in, Rush wasn’t in, Stevie Ray Vaughan wasn’t in. It took Black Sabbath 20 years to get in, which is ridiculous. With baseball, if you’re a kid, your dream is to have a career that leads you to the Baseball Hall of Fame. when you’re a kid and you played rock and roll guitar, you hated the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, because none of your favorite bands were in it. I told them, ‘You need to fix that.’ To their credit, I complained enough that I’m now one of the people who helps decide who is on the ballot every year. I don’t get to pick who is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame every year [though].”
“I go in there every year yelling about Judas Priest now, Iron Maiden, Motorheard, Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden, and Alice In Chains.”
