In 2008, Blink 182 drummer, Travis Barker survived a horrific plane crash that changed his life forever. Along with his best friend, Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein, Barker was one of only two survivors of the deadly accident. The crash claimed the lives of four others on board, leaving Barker and Goldstein severely injured and traumatized.
Travis Barker suffered significant injuries
Barker’s injuries were extensive. He suffered third-degree burns on over 65% of his body, leading to an 11-week hospital stay where he underwent 27 surgeries. The recovery process was grueling, not only physically but emotionally. For more than a decade, Barker refused to fly which was a significant challenge for a musician whose career often demands worldwide travel.
In interviews, Travis has recalled the harrowing moments after the crash, describing how he escaped the burning wreckage. Despite the challenges, Barker has gradually reclaimed his life. In recent years, he’s found the courage to fly again.
During an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Barker was asked about his experience of his flight to Australia for his concerts in February. He was asked how has it been to fly again. He replied:
“I was good for a while. But that Brazilian plane crash had me spiraling when I was in Europe. God bless all those people’s souls. I was affected more than I’ve been in a long time, and it led to me having one of the realest flashback nightmares I’ve had since my accident, and I couldn’t fly the rest of the tour. I did 15 19-hour bus rides, I did ferries. I just had to fly to Europe and back. But I’m not in a great state to fly right now and I’m busing the rest of the year. I have my good times and my bad times, and right now I’m really triggered.”
