U2 react to Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension

U2 recently shared their thoughts on Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension.

U2 reacts

The band’s official Instagram account posted a picture alongside the caption that read:

“In support of the right to speak freely, from left to right, from good to bad to worse

From the not so great to the inspirational…and above all to laughter

Which is the evidence of freedom….”

TV host Jimmy Kimmel was pulled off air indefinitely after comments he made about the shooting of Charlie Kirk, which upset President Trump and other conservatives.

Bono’s criticism of Trump has been consistent since the 2016 election cycle. During U2’s Joshua Tree 30th anniversary tour in 2017, Bono used the band’s concerts to comment on Trump’s policies, particularly immigration and climate change. In a 2017 interview with Rolling Stone, Bono said, “Decency is on the ballot, and everyone has to decide where they stand.” He also warned audiences that leaders who dismissed science and stoked division were dangerous to democracy.

Speaking to The New York Times in 2018, Bono argued that Trump’s rhetoric undermined America’s global reputation, directly affecting causes U2 have supported for decades, such as HIV relief and foreign aid. He also told The Guardian that Trump’s hostility toward the press was “the mark of authoritarianism,” stressing that free media is essential for freedom worldwide. Even after Trump left office in 2021, Bono continued to criticize him, often contrasting Trump’s worldview with what he described as America’s tradition of openness and generosity.

Jimmy Kimmel spoke to Adam Carolla after suspension

The decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel came hours after Brendan Carr, chair of broadcast regulator, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), threatened to act against ABC and its parent company Disney over the remarks.

In his monologue on last Monday, Kimmel stated that the “Maga gang” was “desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them” and of trying to “score political points from it”.

Carr said Kimmel was “appearing to directly mislead the American public”.

Kimmel, who is among the top chat show personalities in the US, has fronted his show Jimmy Kimmel Live! since 2003 and hosted the Oscars four times.

Jimmy Kimmel recently declared that he was in “strange times” and claimed he was being followed by a helicopter after ABC pulled him from the air, his former “The Man Show” co-host revealed.

Kimmel’s longtime friend and former comedy partner, Adam Carolla revealed that he reached out to the talk show host hours after he was indefinitely suspended.

“Wow, it’s strange times out here,” Kimmel wrote, according to Carolla on Thursday’s “The Adam Carolla Show.”
