Natalia Samofalova and Vincent Bedfert have made quite name for themselves in the world of alternative music. Venice May is the musical brainchild of the two. With their genre-defying approach to crafting haunting, beautiful songs chock full of dark melodies and brilliant lyrics the Paris based duo has no shortage of killer potential. With the recent release of their full-length album, Illusion is Inevitable, one thing that is without a doubt inevitable is that these two brilliant musicians are going to continue to take the music world by storm.

Venice May operates in a slight post-alternative world but with their airy, shimmering guitar lines and atmospheric songs, they perfectly at home along the ranks of alternative rock masters A Perfect Circle, Silversun Pickups and The Smashing Pumpkins. Vocals soar all throughout the thirteen song album. Released on September 26th, Illusion is Inevitable is an album possesses a confidence and an execution of a band that has been working and releasing albums for fifteen years.

Venice May formed in 2013. Not only are their songs written, arranged and performed by their two sole members, they also had a hand in the production of Illusion is Inevitable. With an album so consistent throughout it’s hard- or even unfair to single out certain songs as “the best”. That said, the album is book ended by two fantastic tracks.  “A Mouse and A Snake” to start and “In the Presence of a Ghost” to close it out.

The album’s third track, “Hiding Place” also serves as a high point of the album. Haunting vocal melodies show the full prowess of Samofalova’s undeniable powerful vocals. The track has a slight Radiohead- Kid A era feel to it which is a wonderful, welcome nod to one of the genre’s Godfathers. The guitar work and pace of the song lend it to repeat listens which only add to the mystique and brilliance of it.

Venice May rare breed of a band who know who they are and can execute and excel on all cylinders seemingly without breaking a sweat. This is the kind of potential and excitement you want to feel when discovering a new band. Venice May just may be your new musical addiction! Enjoy!
