Dave Grohl was featured on BBC Radio 1’s Rock Show with Daniel P. Carter. Dave Grohl recently revealed why Foo Fighters were booed after a terrible threat. During the show, Grohl gave a list of the three tracks that he felt were the most “career-defining songs”. The first being “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana and the second, being “No One Knows” by Queens of the Stone Age. Here, Grohl revealed his third choice – “Everlong” by Foo Fighters, and he told a story about how he felt “Everlong” was nothing more than a rip off another nineties alternative classic – Sonic Youth’s “Teenage Riot.” Alternative Nation transcribed Grohl’s comments. Dave Grohl was recently photographed with two young blondes at a concert.

Grohl: I think the third choice would be our song, Everlong.

[auduble groans]

Grohl: So that song kinda wasn’t meant to be. It was something that we were just messing around with as we were recording the songs that were going to be on the record. I just considered it to be a Sonic Youth rip off. Like, oh it sounds like “Teenage Riot” or something, it’s just the Sonic Youth riff, you know? We had recorded the record, had taken a break, and I sort of formed and wrote the song. I did a demo with it at my friend, Jeff Turner’s studio in Washington DC and the demo is exactly like the album version. Like it’s the same arrangements and everything.

So I brought it back to the guys and I remember playing it at David Bowie’s fiftieth birthday party at Madison Square Garden. Just saying, Sonic Youth was there as well and I remember playing it for Kim Gordon, thinking “I wonder if she will like it”. So there’s Kim and Thurston [Moore] and I played it and said “You gotta hear this demo I did” and they were like: “Why is that a demo, just put that out. That’s the song right there.”

Grohl continues:

Grohl: Again, I didn’t expect Everlong to be the song that we end the set with for the next twenty-five years. I just thought: “This is kind of cool”. However, for whatever reason people kind of connected to it and I love singing it. Every night. I love singing it and I kind of love singing it because it means fireworks and pizza in about five minutes. I think that one really has carried its own weight for a really long time and I think it’s the song that most people know from Foo Fighters. So that’s a pretty career-defining thing.
