Maynard James Keenan recently told CBS 5 why he refused to attend the Grammys with Tool this past weekend in an interview filmed before the band won Best Metal Performance. Alternative Nation transcribed his comments.

Maynard James Keenan: We have this symposium coming up this weekend. The Arizona Vineyards Alliance will be [comparing two wine grapes]. So Italian grapes grown in Arizona, compared to those same components where they come from in Italy. I’m moderating that panel.

Interviewer: The Grammys are this weekend.

Maynard: Yeah, I’m sorry. I don’t want to dismiss the Grammys, but what we’re doing in Arizona takes precedence. This is much more of a priority because of what we’re building for the future.

Interviewer: Would you want me to accept your award for you?

Maynard: Yes, could you do that for me?

Interviewer: Of course. Do you want me to say anything?

Maynard: You can say whatever you want, but the one thing we’re going to have to have you do, is shave your head.

Keenan later tweeted about the Grammys victory and attending the wine event, “Not everyday you are blessed with a Grammy. Grateful to be able to make both Wine and Music.” Tool are currently in the midst of their ‘Fear Inoculum’ tour of North America, with plans to tour Australia and New Zealand in mere weeks.
