Tool’s Maynard James Keenan recently took to his Instagram account and posted a picture in the Christmas mood. He was seen sporting a red sweater and the writing on it took a dig at a city. It read: “Santa Claus Hates Ohio”

Here is what he wrote in the caption: “Effin A. Enjoy your weekend, people. Even you, Ohio. #michiganders #shotsfired #calmthefuckdown”

Maynard James Keenan talks about writing

With his bands Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, it’d be hard to argue that Maynard James Keenan hasn’t conquered the music world. Now that he’s exploring the visual medium more deeply with his Puscifer TV project, he was recently asked whether he would dive into the world of writing. Tool Drummer recently played his first show after arrest.

“As far as actually writing a novel? Oh god,” Keenan told ABC Audio.

Keenan did publish a biography of his life in the 2016 book A Perfect Union of Contrary Things, but most of the actual writing was done by his co-author, Sarah Jensen.

“I didn’t want to just do a straight autobiography,” Keenan says. “I wanted to tell my stories and then have Sarah, an old friend from high school, I wanted to have her reinterpret those conversations into something that felt more like a novel.”

Keenan added that he’s so used to writing for the express purpose of it becoming a song or an album that he doesn’t know if he could write something not related to music.

“[My writing’s] in response to a set of geometric shapes, three-dimensional audio, right?” Keenan says. “I don’t know that I could just sit down and do that. Although, I do write 12 chapters, 14 chapters, 10 chapters when I’m composing an album.”
