Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan was featured on BBC Radio 1’s Rock Show with Daniel P. Carter. During the show, revealed his “tell” to indicate frustration. A “tell” is a sign or behavioral clue that reveals something one tries to hide. Keenan also discusses how it is important to leave toxic personalities that are hanging on in your life. Alternative Nation transcribed the comments.  Maynard James Keenan recently revealed why he abandoned Tool.

Maynard James Keenan: Yeah my friends over at Shadow Tumbleweed always laugh because they know when I’m frustrated. It’s like, I have a “tell”, my exhale is my “tell”

[Keenan breathes]

Keenan: And they go:

“Oh, he’s mad about something.”

Keenan: From a frustration point of view, an exhale can be that release of tension that you are hanging on to an internalizing. However, it can also be a deep breath and a calm exhale of just moving on and going: “Oh, I don’t know why I was hanging on to that”.

Daniel P. Carter: Yeah.

Keenan: I am the one hanging on to it, it is not the one hanging on to me. It doesn’t care about me, it’s just a thing. Whatever that thing is, whatever that personality is, whatever that entity is, it’s not hanging onto me. It can try but in all honesty, in your life, you just have to exhale, let those things go and move on.
