There’s been a huge saga filled with drama going on between Serj Tankian of System Of A Down and solo fame and the infamous Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin. While this does, in fact, seem like a very odd dueling of worlds – the former of Serj Tankian brings up some very big points on why Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin should no longer support the man who signed them to their big break of a deal.
Serj Tankian has been in the news a lot more than he has been within the past five or so years. Earlier in the month, people tried to cancel Serj Tankian based upon his support and use of NFTs. NFTs are Non-Fungible-Tokens. They are collectibles, like sports cards or general art that are held on a blockchain.
The blockchain then shows that you own the art/card/etc…People were pointing the finger at Tankian for ruining the environment in this fashion due to Bitcoin using up a lot of energy which leads to environmental problems. The issue is that NFTs are not hosted on Bitcoin. They are hosted on many other environmentally friendly blockchains. This blew over quickly once people started realizing that they were wrong with their assumption.
However, now Serj Tankian is making news on his own accord as he has been calling out Jimmy Page over Ahmet Ertegun. Ahmed was the man who signed Jimmy’s band to Atlantic Records. Serj wrote to Jimmy publicly on Instagram calling him out for honoring Ahmet, out as well as Led Zeppelin for unknowingly supporting Ahmed.
Serj said the following in a post: “Dear Mr. @jimmypage. Its very admirable that @ledzeppelin played a tribute show in 2007 for Ahmed Ertegun as the man who signed your band to Atlantic records. What you likely don’t know is that man spent millions of dollars on think tanks and chairs at various US universities all with the goal of denying the #ArmenianGenocide. There is absolutely no honor in that I’m sure you’ll agree.”
Serj then followed up with another post that showed how the news from him was making the rounds. This begs the question, is it right for Serj to seemingly cancel Led Zeppelin for something they weren’t involved in? While there is no excuse for Ahmed’s actions; Is it okay to cancel a band just by their association without knowledge of what was going on? You be the judge.
