Watch Billy Corgan’s Emotional Performance Near Chris Cornell’s Grave

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan performed the first of four shows at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on Thursday night. Late Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell was laid to rest at Hollywood Forever in May following his death.

Corgan discussed the concerts on Joe Rogan, stating that the capacity for the shows there is 150 people. He also mentioned that because the show was at Hollywood Forever, he witnessed funerals being planned.

Corgan also recently performed on The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan was asked in a recent SF Weekly interview about the deaths of many alternative rock legends.

You’re a member of a shrinking club, as so many of your alt-rock contemporaries — Kurt Cobain, Scott Weiland, Layne Staley, Bradley Nowell, Shannon Hoon, and, most recently, Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington, have died of accidental overdoses or taken their own lives. Do you have any insight into this troubling trend?

“I wish I had more answers and I’d done more. I knew Chris, and we had a bit of a falling out and were never able to patch that up. I wish I hadn’t contributed in even the most miniscule way to his unhappiness. I wish I’d have been a force for encouragement, because he influenced me, and I looked up to him. Chester was obviously one of the best rock singers ever, and it was such a great honor when he covered ‘Bullet with Butterfly Wings.’ It’s haunting to think all this talent is gone. That’s a lot of memory, a lot of music, a lot of we should be sitting on the lawn when we’re 60, singing “Black Hole Sun” together with the guy who wrote it. Those are shared tragedies.

As far as why, I don’t think it’s as simple as we’re cursed as a generation. But we were the children of Baby Boomers, the generation that had the pill and decided they didn’t want kids. We were the latchkey kids, who grew up on Gilligan’s Island because there was no babysitter. Maybe that creates some sorrow or something that’s deeper than we even recognize.”

Is it too much to ask that Chris be allowed to truly rest in peace?

    • Dez Pornojesus

This has nothing to do with Cornell, countless other people is buried there. The title is just shameless click bait.

      • Olga Stewart

        Are, you mean?

      • Olga Stewart

Also, I guess I see a cemetery as a place where the dead are really allowed to rest peacefully.

So obviously our opinions differ on this.

        • Dez Pornojesus

It’s not a matter of opinion. We’re not talking about any ordinary cemetery, it’s the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, and there’s a Masonic Lodge where they have concerts and events. Nothing out of the ordinary. The author of the article tried to link this to Cornell just because it’s one of the most recent famous deaths, and Corgan had some friction with Soundgarden in the past. Would you be outraged if it said “Watch Corgan play near Dee Dee Ramones’ grave”? Or “…near Jayne Mansfield’s grave”? Again, this has nothing to do with Cornell and I woulnd’t be surprized if the event was booked before he even died. Noone is trying to disturb Chris Cornell’s rest.

          • Olga Stewart

Actually, yes, I would be outraged if any sort of concert took place in a cemetery.

I understand and accept the points that you making about this article. But I just don’t agree with the part that performances and such are raking place in cemeteries.

So I suppose we will have to agree to disagree on that particular point.

          • Dez Pornojesus

Well it does sound strange to me, and it could never happen here in Italy where I’m from, but Hollywood doesn’t really surprize me anymore 😉
