The Meat Puppets frontman Curt Kirkwood discussed Kurt Cobain overdosing in Rome in March 1994 and how it changed The Meat Puppets tour in a new interview with Kyle Meredith on Consequence of Sound. He said the truth is that he was very worried about Cobain after the Rome incident as well. Alternative Nation transcribed his comments.

“So we were over there, we were supposed to start the tour with them in Prague, and then he had an overdose in Rome, and that tour got canceled. So we’re over there, we filled in with some of our own, and then waited until Soul Asylum came over there, who we were supposed to hook up with after Nirvana. We did that, but by the way [the year] started for them, they had this fiasco in Rome, I was just worried about it.

Sure enough, we came back from Europe and got off the plane in San Francisco, and that was the news, he’s dead. Here we’re just having a good streak here, people are liking this new record, but a big part of our warm envelope, which is how I looked at it, just this nice and cool, these guys were great to play with, and I liked the show we did with the Unplugged.

It wasn’t to be a record quite yet, that was I think a posthumous decision really. But man, that puts a strange spin on the whole year, since here we are just kind of floating on a pretty magic time for us, and the bad side of it.”
