In a new How The Hell Did That Happen? with Mary Lou Lord and Maryanne Window podcast, Lord discussed her late ex-boyfriend, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. Alternative Nation reporter Mike Mazzarone transcribed her comments.

“I lived in this cool apartment and one night Kurt came to the apartment with me and was like:

‘Jesus, who lives here?!’

And I said “Well I do! It’s [inaudible’s] apartment. There were so many records, stuff to do and it was really fun, so we just played records. Like I told you, I was a health freak, I didn’t drink, I didn’t smoke, whatever. That night though I drank a little bit and smoke some buds like an idiot. I mean, you’re hanging out with Kurt Cobain, what the fuck! So we were a little bit buzzed, listened to records and then he said:

‘I want you to play for me.’

So I started out playing some Daniel Johnston, some Shawn Colvin. It was crazy, like holy shit and then I looked at him and then I started playing some Nirvana.”

She later said, “Now that I think of this, here I am in my little grungy jeans and sweater, I was dressed just like him. You know, it was just bizarre. I had this little bob haircut and I looked very different because I had been going to the gym for the past eight months, riding my bike and being really healthy.

I was in a really good time of my life and so talking to him about Olympia, growing up, about Tobi [Vail], she was the drummer from Bikini Kill, how much he loved Bikini Kill and how it didn’t work out with Tobi. So then he was single, he was a single guy who was still totally in love with Tobi, but he was at this point of his life where everything was about to begin.”
