Rage Against The Machine drummer Brad Wilk revealed the secret to the dark and gritty sound of Evil Empire in a new Instagram post.

“Birthday wishes! 23? Damn, that’s how old I was when we formed RATM. Probably my favorite rage record right here. Recorded in a small rehearsal room in LA, this record is dark, gritty n full of funk. While I love the first record, drum wise I had more texture to my playing that I wanted to be heard. Nuance, grace notes, etc. Even though it might of been difficult times for us as a band, we were all at the top of our game. Im grateful and honored that many of you hold this one in such high regard.”

He also recently posted, “This is Charlie. He came to fix the Air Conditioner. We started talking and turns out Charlie graduated from Juilliard. He’s a master Jazz pianist and has also scored many films and TV shows. Listen to this guys feel!

He got outa the music biz.. he couldn’t make a decent living doing it anymore. He talked to me about how he barely sees residuals like he used to. This whole experience today blew my mind. Charlie, you’re a working class HERO and that’s something to be. Totally humbled. #mayday #internationalworkersday #inspired.”
