Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan fronted Tool members Adam Jones, Danny Carey, and Justin Chancellor in a new backstage photo as both bands are playing some festivals together on their European tours. Corgan had high praise for Tool’s performance, calling it ‘mesmerizing’ and saying that they ‘inspired’ him.

The Smashing Pumpkins and Tool are both busy this year, with Maynard James Keenan announcing the new Tool album will come out on August 30th. The Smashing Pumpkins are currently recording Shiny and Oh So Bright Vol. 2 and a Christmas album, with both expected to be released later this year.

I’m so excited to see Tool at Download Festival.

“They were truly fantastic and mesmerizing last night. Will be honored to share the stage with them at these festivals.”

Would you ever do another concept album?

“Watching Tool last night inspired me to want to build one more mighty machine, yes.”

Corgan and Adam Jones are both huge wrestling fans, with Jones being photographed at many WWE NXT shows with Triple H, while Billy Corgan owns the National Wrestling Alliance, and he was the President of TNA Wrestling in 2016 before a lawsuit over ownership with Dixie Carter drove him out of the company in October 2016.

Tool and The Smashing Pumpkins are members of a shrinking group of 90’s alternative rock bands that still have their original lead singers. Both bands also do not have their original bass players in their current lineups, Paul D’Amour and D’arcy Wretzky respectively.
