Bruce Springsteen Appears to Snub Chris Christie
Bruce Springsteen appeared to bypass a high-five attempt from former New Jersey governor Chris Christie during a concert in New York this week, in a moment that quickly circulated online and reignited discussion of their long-running political differences.
At Thursday night’s show at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Springsteen walked through the crowd during “10th Avenue Freeze-Out,” and The Independent reported that he tapped hands with several fans before turning back toward the stage just as Christie reached out from the front row.
Video of the exchange was filmed by journalist Mr. Mike Ryan, and while it is unclear whether Springsteen intentionally avoided Christie, the singer’s head appeared to be down as he moved through the general admission area and also missed other fans’ outstretched hands. Christie, a self-described superfan who has said he has attended more than 150 Springsteen concerts, continued clapping after the moment.
The report also revisited previous tensions between the two New Jersey figures, including Springsteen’s past criticism of Christie’s policies and a 2014 “Born to Run” parody with Mr. Jimmy Fallon that mocked Christie amid the Bridgegate scandal. Christie has previously acknowledged the contrast in their views, but has said their relationship improved in recent years, claiming they now text and talk.
The Independent said it has requested comment from Christie and Springsteen’s representatives as the clip continues to spread across social media and fan circles.
