Foo Fighters wrapped up their ‘But Here We Are’ North American tour in their hometown of Seattle last night, and Dave Grohl discussed the earliest origins of the band. Grohl began strumming the chords of “Big Me” on acoustic guitar, the classic hit from their self-titled 1995 debut album.

Dave said the song was first recorded with Krist Novoselic at Nirvana’s last studio session in January 1994, which also featured “You Know You’re Right,” which was released as a single in 2002. The Nirvana session version of “Big Me” has never surfaced. Grohl then shouted out Novoselic, saying he couldn’t see his ‘tall ass’ anywhere, but knew he was at the concert.

Dave Grohl recording when Nirvana ended

Grohl and Novoselic worked on Foo Fighters material at Nirvana’s last studio session in early 1994, but after Kurt Cobain died in April 1994 and Nirvana disbanded, Novoselic ultimately did not join Foo Fighters later that year when Grohl formed the band. Touring Nirvana guitarist Pat Smear did join, and Novoselic later has appeared as a guest over the years with Foo Fighters, both on the road and in the studio. Grohl and Novoselic have also reunited Nirvana for occasional performances since 2014 with guest singers and Pat Smear on guitar, and they also joined forced in Sound City Players in 2013.
