Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine has offered what amounts to a public olive branch to Metallica’s James Hetfield while discussing why he chose to record “Ride the Lightning” for what he has described as Megadeth’s final album. Mustaine framed the move as a way of closing the loop on his early Metallica contributions rather than reigniting decades-old tension.

Explaining the choice, Mustaine said “Ride the Lightning” best highlighted elements he brought to the song, including specific chord ideas, and he argued that changes made after his departure altered parts and credits. Mustaine characterised the cover as “closing the circle” and paying respect to the band he co-founded, adding, “love me or hate me, they’ll never be able to erase me.”

Mustaine also stressed that he does not want a continuing feud with his former bandmates, saying he has “put that to sleep” and that his priority was showing respect whether or not Hetfield cared for the gesture. He added that he was not expecting the cover to change Metallica’s stance toward him, describing his intentions as straightforward rather than strategic.

The latest comments echo prior moments where Mustaine has revisited his Metallica history, including a recent confession about his relationship with the band as fans continue to debate his role in the group’s earliest era.

Mustaine’s remarks arrived with no public response cited from Hetfield or Metallica, leaving the cover and accompanying comments as a one-sided attempt to draw a line under one of metal’s most famous fallouts.
