New York City aka the Big Apple aka The City Than Never Sleeps. Call it by any one of it’s many nicknames and an instantaneous feeling of excitement commences. That same contagious feeling of excitement practically jumps out and sonically attacks you when listening to A New City; the latest EP from Los Angeles Based singer-songwriter Eddy Yang.

Released on April 5th, 2019, A New City shows off Eddy Yang’s clearly defined artistic voice. Inspired by a trip to New York City, Eddy Yang operates with a confidence both in his lyrics and the overall execution of his vision. Big, dreamy sounding guitars swing and sway through each of the EP’s five tracks. You get a taste of early 00’s pop-punk honesty along with some really fun industrial-esque drums throwing in a nice, unexpected surprise.

“Release Me”, the EP’s third track stands out as Yang’s finest moment. The yearning in Yang’s vocal melodies over the melancholic choice of guitar chords provide a really great throwback kind of track to the heyday of mid-to-late-90’s alternative radio rock such as Matchbox 20 and Counting Crows.

“In the City” features some really impressive fret work. The guitar solo that essentially comes in the first quarter of “In the City” proves Yang’s point when he later claims “We’re feeling ready. This is Rock and Roll.” At an impressive ten minutes and ten seconds, the track has no shortage of memorable guitar leads and electric melodies you just cannot say no to.

The era of the singer-songwriter may be something in the past but you cannot get it back without original, uncompromising talent willing to stand out in front and without hesitation deliver straight up awesome rock and roll. Check out Eddy Yang and his fresh new EP, A New City.
