Ex-Pearl Jam Drummer Reveals He Has Unique Disease

Original Pearl Jam drummer Dave Krusen discussed having Alopecia and drumming in Candlebox in a new Faithfull Forum on Pearl Jam Radio. Alternative Nation transcribed his comments.

“I played with [Candlebox] years ago, and then did a couple other records with them. Kevin called up and said, ‘Do you want to go do some shows?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, sure.’ So I went and played some shows, and I’ve got this alopecia, like this autoimmune disease, so my eyebrows have been falling out. It’s kind of a funny story, but essentially, I think it kind of got in the way. Kevin’s kind of obsessed with it, and he brought it up on stage the last tour I did with him. I’m holding the guy back, I’ve got to recuse myself from drumming in the band. That, and just I’m [inaudible] out of issues, we just have so much history that it was just kind of a good stepping off point for me. It was just kind of a temporary situation, I was just filling in a bit on drums anyways.”

He also discussed getting sober.

“It was very hard, but I went to AA and got a sponsor, and just did what he said, and that helped.”

“It took me a couple years [after leaving Pearl Jam], about a year and a half I guess. I went to rehab right away, but I wasn’t really ready. It took a little more going down that road, fortunately I’ve figured it out, and [Pearl Jam] been very instrumental in that happening. I credit the band for that.”
