Fans React to Foo Fighters’ New Drummer Ilan Rubin
A Reddit post shared a detailed opinion on Ilan Rubin’s performance with Foo Fighters. The user praised Rubin’s powerful and great drumming, saying his style fits the band’s high-energy live shows better than former drummer Josh Freese.
“Ilan is amazing, he strikes the drums with tons of force and energy… Ilan’s energy is a better fit with the Foo’s live energy.”
However, the fan also felt that Rubin sometimes misses certain signature fills found on the original recordings, especially in Arlandria and White Limo.
“He fails to hit some accents, some drum fills that are on the original recorded songs… Arlandria and White Limo specifically… it does bother me.”
Another major complaint was the lack of extended or improvised sections that used to be highlights of Foo Fighters’ performances.
“What happened to the extended/improvised sections?… One of the things that made me fall in love with FF was that the songs were better live than the studio versions.”
The fan wondered if this change might be out of respect for Taylor Hawkins, but still praised the extended jams on songs like This Is a Call, No Son of Mine, and Best of You. Despite small criticisms, they ended it by saying that the show was “great great” and said they’re excited for what’s next.
“While I might have some criticisms here and there, great great show overall. I’m really excited.”
Who Is Ilan Rubin?
Ilan Rubin is best known for his role in Nine Inch Nails, where he has been a touring drummer since 2009. He holds a major distinction in rock music history: he was the youngest person ever inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame when NIN were inducted in 2020 at the age of 32. Rubin Replaced Josh Freese After a Short Tenure
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Rubin joined Foo Fighters just months after the band parted ways with Josh Freese, who took over in 2023 following the passing of Taylor Hawkins in 2022. Freese played with the band for only one tour cycle before the change was made. Now, with Rubin taking on the role, the Foo Fighters’ live sound is obviously changing and fans all over the world are adjusting to this.
