Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan was interviewed on Marc Maron’s podcast recently. On the show, Duff told a story how former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Izzy Stradlin managed to turn a run of the mill plane ride into the not-so-friendly skies. Stradlin was arrested for urinating on a plane. Alternative Nation reporter Mike Mazzarone transcribed Duff and Maron’s comments.

Duff: We went out to Chicago to work out on the Illusions record and there was a lot of cocaine, a lot of alcohol and that’s okay but we knew there was a line you didn’t cross and that’s when you played when you rehearsed…

Maron: Is this for Axl [Rose] or just in general?

Duff: Just as musicians. Like, you can get fucked up, we are world class at it but don’t let it fuck up your recording, rehearsal or anything like that. That’s the line you don’t cross. Do whatever you want, just don’t cross that line. You know?

Maron: Yeah.

Duff: That line started to get crossed. It was Steven [Adler] at first and Izzy [Stradlin] he got busted suddenly on a plane, doing something and they’ve landed the plane in Phoenix and he got arrested off of the plane and put in jail, left in a jail in Phoenix.  Izzy got sober [after that]  and I’m so happy for him but I’m staying away from him because if you got a sober guy in your midst you don’t wanna hear that you have to get sober.

Maron: You know, somehow or another, you’ve managed as grownups to get through all this, the long ride to get back together, you’re pros, people are excited to see you and you’ve somehow managed a détente with Axl and you’re out there doing big shows.

Duff: Yeah, fast forward to now.
