Johnny Depp has been the focal point of the movie industry for many years. In recent years, however, he has been the focal point for controversy as well. While Depp has had many defenders that came from working with him in the film world – there are some who do have some quips that involve Depp as well.
As reported by GFR – While Johnny Depp helped to give Winona Ryder an even more incredible career, it seems that he also did cost her a lot as she was supposed to be in The Godfather Part III. According to a 1990 Vanity Fair feature, it seems that a phone call Johnny Depp made totally killed any chance that Ryder had at the aforementioned role.
What happened was that Johnny Depp called the film’s studio to report that Ryder was too sick to work, which, of course led to the role going elsewhere. Now, this wasn’t done in jest. Johnny Depp was dating Winona Ryder at the time and was looking out for her health.
The story goes that Ryder never showed up for her call, leaving directors and crew just waiting around. They felt it was a very bad look. Depp would then call in and say she was not feeling well at all. Francis Coppola sent doctors to examine the actress, who determined that Ryder was suffering from a nervous collapse, likely due to being overworked, and she would not be mentally fit to continue the film.
This would then be the end of Ryder’s ride with the Godfather. In hindsight, it didn’t totally ruin her career at all. In fact, it was more just a small bump in a very wealthy and thriving road. It ended up for the better.
