Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer singer Maynard James Keenan has opened up about his uneasy relationship with fame, telling fans he doesn’t see himself the way many admirers do. In a recent interview, Keenan said he feels uncomfortable being praised and would rather listeners focus on the music than elevate him personally.

Speaking with Louder Sound, he discussed how fan adoration affects him, Keenan said he struggles with the idea that strangers project meaning onto him that he doesn’t feel he has earned.

He said, “We’re just trying to get this right, man! I’m not who they think I am, I’m a fraud… I’m just trying to get it right and then you come up praising me?!” Keenan said.

Keenan continued by describing distrust as part of his baseline temperament, adding that being put on a pedestal “freaks” him out and insisting that he isn’t “that special.”

“I don’t trust people to begin with, and now you think I’m more than I am… That freaks me out,” he continued. “Just listen to the music, because I’m not that special.”

The comments align with a pattern of guarded public messaging from the singer, particularly when it comes to managing expectations around future Tool activity and avoiding hype around unconfirmed plans.

Outside of music, Keenan has also spoken bluntly about cultural flashpoints, recently arguing that pronoun fights are “absurd” in remarks that similarly pushed back against simplistic narratives and internet outrage.

Keenan’s latest remarks underline a consistent stance: he wants the work to stand on its own, without myth-making around the person behind it. For fans, it’s another candid reminder that the singer’s public image has never matched the level of adulation he receives, even as his projects continue to draw intense loyalty and scrutiny.
