Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan was recently interviewed on the Squared Circle Pit wrestling podcast. Alternative Nation transcribed some quotes about the Tool frontman’s relationship with his fans.

The host said, “I feel like there’s always a little tension between you and fans of your work, because you’ll kind of mock them like a bad guy in wrestling mocks wrestling fans, call people dumb or sheep or whatever. Is that your way of engaging in the audience, or just you having fun?”

Keenan responded, “I think there’s part of us all that’s kind of lazy, just to be able to call yourself out and say, you can do better, we can all do better. Whatever it is you’re doing, take another look at it, you can do better. Be conscious of where you are, be conscious of what you’re doing, be conscious of the things around you, situational awareness.

Just be part of the solution rather than part of the problem, I think a lot of people end up just kind of settling into being part of the problem. By just calling it out, we’re all better for it. If people get mad at you for calling out saying we can all do better, they’re probably part of the problem.”
