Former Megadeth drummer Nick Menza has died of a heart attack whilst performing on stage with his band OHM at the Baked Potato club in Los Angeles.

Tributes from Megadeth members poured in this morning after the tragic events. Lead singer Dave Mustaine said: “Tell me this isn’t true”, whilst guitarist Marty Friedman said on Facebook, “We all know the great and unique drummer that Nick Menza was, but he was also a trustworthy friend, a hilarious bandmate, as well as a very loving dad. I’m beyond sad, did not see this coming at all. RIP Brother.”

Menza had played with Megadeth on such classics as “Rust in Peace”, “Countdown to Extinction”, “Youthanasia” and “Cryptic Writings”. He had also toured extensively with the band and only a knee injury meant that he had to take time off from the band in 1998. Menza never got his full time job back but he did remain friends with some members of the band. Menza also played drums on all three of Marty Friedman’s solo efforts in the 1990’s.
