Stryper’s Michael Sweet recently sent a message to Kendrick Lamar following the rapper’s recent Super Bowl halftime show.
“After that halftime show, I sure do appreciate this guy more than ever,” the frontman wrote in the caption of his Instagram post, dropping a photo of Prince.
A fan commented, “Not a single musical instrument up there during the half time show this year – but there was a car” and Sweet replied, “Man, just give me a simple rock show with 4-5 guys (or girls), black or white to rock it out.”
The singer added, “Without the 100 other people trying to make it interesting but somehow failing to do so. Just an old fashioned high energy rock show. Go figure.”
Kendrick Lamar scripted history as the first solo rapper to headline the Halftime Show, via NME. He was also joined by SZA for two songs and featured Serena Williams and Samuel L. Jackson. His performance also saw a shot at popular rapper Drake, with whom he had a feud last year.
Lamar performed ‘Not Like Us’ and made a dig at Drake suing Universal Music Group. Fans have shared mixed reactions on social media, with some calling it ‘a masterpiece’ and others calling it ‘the worst halftime performance ever.’
“The Superdome crowd yelling ‘A-MINORRRRR.’ Kendrick Lamar is unreal,” a user wrote on X. Another person said, “Kendrick Lamar performing ‘Not Like Us’ and calling Drake a p*do in front of 100M viewers live at the Super Bowl is going down in history.”
Another user wasn’t happy with Lamar’s performance as they said, “Lil Wayne should’ve performed over Kendrick lamar gotta be worst halftime performance ever.” One other agreed, writing, “Kendrick Lamar may have just performed the worst Super Bowl performance in the last decade.”
Lamar kicked off his set with an unreleased verse, then performed ‘Squabble Up,’ ‘HUMBLE.,’ ‘DNA.,’ and ‘Euphoria.’ His Super Bowl performance followed a big week, as he won five Grammy awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for his Drake diss song ‘Not Like Us.’
