Pearl Jam Member Reveals Why Eddie Vedder Canceled Show With Nirvana

In a new interview on The Powell Movement, Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament was asked if the band have ever had to cancel shows due to members of the band having medical issues. Alternative Nation transcribed Ament’s comments.

He mentioned he has injured his back and muscles on stage, and that he tore ligaments mid show during a performance a few years ago in Boston, but was able to continue the tour.

“I think everybody in the band has had to deal with that. Mike [McCready] has Crohn’s, and he’s had to deal with actually pooping his pants. [Eddie Vedder]’s main instrument is his voice. If I had to go sing a show right now, I would have a hard time because the weather is changing and my throat feels funny.

He’s never canceled a show because of his throat, which is just a miracle. He knows all the tricks, and he knows how to deal with it. There’s red alert, orange alert, yellow alert, whatever. He knows what he needs to do to make it work.”

“There’s only been a couple of things that we’ve canceled over the years, it’s usually been weather related. One time super early on Ed got sick, and it was an MTV New Years Eve thing with Nirvana and Cypress Hill. But I think maybe him getting sick had more to do with it was this thing. He wasn’t letting anybody down really.”

    Quite the “revelation”..
I bet Ed just wanted to let Nirvana shine and not let pj steal the show.

Nirvana>PJ, sorry bud Cobain was a better songwriter. Nirvana was better. PJ may have more albums and longevity but it is quality over quantity. A billion pages have been written about Cobain, had Vedder died in 1994 I don’t think anyone would be writing that much about him.

      • Jock Mahoney

        Absurd

        • Raj

          Nope very rational

      • Kyle Keller

Lol that’s funny. Your must only hear music instead of listening.

        • Raj

          I’m not downplaying Vedder’s contribution but let’s call a spade a spade.

          • theseeker7

I’m glad you put it that way, because let’s also remember factual history. Cobain wasn’t criminally taken from us before his time.
He was a cowardly little bitch who couldn’t even be half a man to keep a shotgun out of his mouth. He had a wife & child that he utterly gave up on to be selfish in the worst possible way.

and mind you that’s coming from someone who’s had his fair share of thoughts veer not necessarily far from suicidal every once in awhile.

          • Raj

If you look at the flipside it also takes a lot of bravery albeit in tragic way for someone to take their own life. If Courtney was cheating on him then she gave up on Cobain way before he ever gave up on her. Frances is the victim in all of this.

      • Von

Cobain was a gimmick. Read “Heavier Than Heaven” and you will see the real Cobain. The one that would call MTV daily to get “Smells like Teen Spirit” played. He started a revolution in Rock and Roll and defined the 90’s but he can’t carry Eddie’s jock.

        • Raj

Vedder would be a nobody had Andy Wood lived, what would he be doing? Just another guy surfing he may have fronted a band but not at anywhere near PJ’s level.

          • Von

If “if & buts” were candies and nuts it would be Christmas all year round.

If I won the lottery I wouldn’t have to work. What is your point?

      • theseeker7

you’re a MOD here, and you seriously just made that post?? lol

        • Raj

That’s misleading, I just visit the site a lot before when it was Grungereport. Then it became AN and one day lo and behold I saw MOD beside my name. Double B gave some powers and I haven’t even written an article. Now how to get a slice of double B’s royalty cheque, hmmmm.

          because it is mildly revealing?
          doesn’t matter, it’s 2018.

I’ve had battles with addiction like heroin, with being a father. It’s no small feat to carry on and get sober, I have nothing but sympathy for Kurt considering he was probably thinking he was doing his daughter a favor by ending his life. I couldn’t imagine having my kids mom be anything like Courtney. All that aside, I’m a Nirvana fan since bleach back when I already was a fan of 3 albums of Soundgarden, and a huge mother love bone fan. Kurt was a great artist but the tomin of him being a tortured soul made his music better, had he lived there would not be a Nirvana now considering Dave grohl’s ambition. Vedder is a genius, tortured by his search for purity, peace, and perfection. Im sorry for anyone who can’t enjoy at least half their catalogue. Eddie Vedder makes music that adults can enjoy and relate to, Kurt was still a kid with kid issues, when you start using your brain stops maturing, we could relate to him then cuz we were kids and no one til the surge of music then spoke so openly about anxiety, depression, and real shit that needed to change now we’re back in an age where money cars and sex sells again, I’ll keep listening to pearl jam thanks.

          Good post & true.
Also best to you w/ staying on the clear path.

  • Hwang Sunghyeop

Jeff always have to got some reason. he already said similar things before. The Unplugged, Basketball game. I bet Jeff did not want to play with Nirvana.

no need to apologize Raj your shared opinions and thoughts are certainly welcome and I’m equally entitled to do the same!

  • Lorenzo Takeout

Wow, I had no deep knowledge of Jeff Ament’s background beyond the Seattle music stuff, but he is one innately smart and hard working guy.
He is proof that even literal, humorless & uneducated people can completely be transformed IF they have the desire to look outside the pragmatic day to day.
It shows how much being introduced to non mainstream music can open up your mind and make you curious about the bigger picture.
I don’t mean to sound like a cliched curmudgeon about pop music because it has it’s place, but if half the adam levine (or whomever the rest of them are) really sat and listened to King Crimson, Kraftwerk, early Roxy music & Talking Heads, Pere Ubu etc… or even bands from now who are interesting in the same way; it would make them see how empty, dumb and synthetic the radio music is.
Anyway, what a down to earth, grounded and sharp guy Jeff Ament is.

  • Lorenzo Takeout

The interviewer fills in half of the answers and tells him how he feels before he even has a chance to answer.
