In a new documentary on DrumChannel.com, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith gets the spotlight as he discusses his life and times with the Chili Peppers and his family.  Interviews with his brother and mother were conducted as well, and lend insight into one of alt. rock’s greatest drummers.

All was not to be had things not fallen into place.  Chad’s mother had a comment about the path to stardom:

Joan Smith: “I had such good neighbors.  I remember one who lived right next door said, ‘we heard him drumming and it was really disturbing but we know it’s Chad so we’re not gonna call the police.’ They were very understanding.”

Though his mom wanted him to get a real job when he was young, she saw his passion for practice:

Joan: “You’ve got to do something else.  You’ve got to get a real job. Because, you know, there’s only one in a million make it.  So, we’re as surprised as other people.”

Later in the profile, she continued:

Joan: “We had a system where he’d play in the basement.  When I was going out, I’d flick the light switch; that meant you can start.  When I came home, I flicked it again, that meant you stopped.”

Smith moved to California where his brother was living early on.  Interviewed in the doc, his brother reminisced:

“It’s not been easy for me.  This has not been a walk in the park.  This is a lot of trials and tribulations, this includes jail time, it includes stitches.  Am I making this up?  So we go way way way way way back into lip synching Beatles songs and finding old Black Sabbath records, playing in bands and garages and basements that surfaced up into backyard parties.  All kinds of good times.”
