Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro recently confirmed that he has unreleased album recorded with late Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins.
Hawkins passed away a couple of years back at 50 years old. He was found dead in a hotel room at the Four Seasons Casa Medina in Bogota.
Dave Navarro talks about the album with Taylor Hawkins
The two legendary musicians were close friends and shared a mutual admiration for each other’s work. In late 2021, they announced a new band together called NHC. The name came from the initials of the group’s three members – Navarro, Hawkins and bassist Chris Chaney.
However, just a few months after the announcement of NHC, Hawkins passed away tragically while touring with Foo Fighters in South America. The drummer’s sudden demise hit Navarro hard.
During an interview with Rolling Stone, Dave was asked whether the material recorded with Taylor Hawkins be released. He said that he was hopeful, and revealed that they have a completed mastered album. However, it’s too early to release, but he says that the right time will come for fans to hear it. He said:
“I sure hope so, man. We have a completed mastered album, but this might be a little soon. I don’t really know where that stands, but I’ll tell you that I really believe that it deserves to come out, because that record to me, really showcased what a brilliant all-around musician Taylor was, because he wrote most of the songs, played the drums, and sang them.
His overall musicianship, I think, really deserves to be known and highlighted. And he had other projects, Chevy Metal. He had Coattail Riders, and Birds of Satan. But they were somewhat tongue-in-cheek. It’s like he almost kind of wanted to take the piss out of himself before anybody else could. But on the NHC material, I wouldn’t let him do that. I was like, “No, dude. We’re not making this funny. We’re making this real,” and so I really hope it sees the light of day. But yeah, that was one of the most happy experiences of my life making that record with him, and just obviously, I haven’t been able to listen to it since.”
After their inception in 1985, Jane’s Addiction became one of the first bands to lead the alternative rock movement of the ’90s. The band produced several chart-topping hits including “Been Caught Stealing,” “Just Because” and “Jane Says.” However, the band parted ways on two occasions throughout its nearly career of 40 years. The band’s latest full-band break-up took place in 2004. In 2022, bassist Avery rejoined the group after departing in 2010. A band member’s recent comments sparked speculation about splitting again.
