Dave Navarro, in a recent interview with Guitar World, opened up about the profound impact Taylor Hawkins’ death had on him. Navarro revealed that he didn’t play guitar for an entire year following Hawkins’ passing. The loss of the Foo Fighters drummer, with whom Navarro had been working on an album, deeply affected him.

Navarro described Hawkins as not just a phenomenal drummer but also an inspiring artist and songwriter who was beloved by everyone. The emotional weight of losing such a significant musical partner and friend led Navarro to step away from his instrument during that time.

However, Navarro eventually found his way back to music. He mentioned that his return was fueled by a renewed sense of purpose and the desire to honor Hawkins’ memory through his art. Navarro’s journey back to playing guitar involved rediscovering his passion and commitment to music, which was greatly influenced by the legacy and inspiration left by Hawkins.

“I’ll be honest – I didn’t pick up the guitar for about a year. And because he was such an inspiring artist… Not only was he a phenomenal drummer, but he was also an amazing songwriter and lyricist, and he was just one of those humans that everybody loved. Everybody loved him.”

Eventually, Navarro found solace and healing in reconnecting with music. He started by playing cover songs, gradually re-familiarizing himself with the guitar. This return to music was part of Navarro’s process of finding peace and keeping Hawkins’ memory alive through his own artistic expression.

“For the first year after losing Taylor, I didn’t play for a long time. Then, about a year into it, I picked up the guitar, started playing some cover songs, and just kind of got used to the instrument in my hand again.”

Hawkins’ tragic passing in March 2022 happened when he experienced chest pains before a scheduled Foo Fighters performance. Despite efforts to revive him with CPR, he was unresponsive and passed away at the age of 50.
