In a live conversation a few months ago, Tool and A Perfect Circle frontman Maynard James Kennan revealed how playing in multiple bands has affected his voice and if he’s taken care of it well enough over the years. Alternative Nation transcribed Keenan’s comments.

Interviewer: You mentioned your other band, Puscifer. How does that work inform this album [Eat the Elephant], because you have been doing a lot of work with them. Did it prepare you in some way for this?

Keenan: Again, just efficiency with the way we were looking to record. I think it just prepared me for this. Efficiency, taking care of my throat, all those things.

Interviewer: I would imagine that given what you put into singing, that’s something you need to be mindful of, is protecting your voice. Has that become more important over time?

Keenan: It should of become more important earlier (laughs). We’ve all been there, right? ‘I maybe shouldn’t of done that as much as I did in college.’

Tool are set to tour Europe this summer and play North American festivals in the spring, and they are projected to release their new album sometime between mid-May and mid-July according to Maynard James Keenan.
