Alex Van Halen recently shared more details about his upcoming album project. He revealed that Wolfgang Van Halen played bass on previously unreleased Van Halen recordings.

Alex Van Halen talks about bassist

Alex told Kazagastao that the material he and Steve Lukather are considering comes from unfinished recordings meant for the next Van Halen album. The drums, guitar, and bass were already recorded, but Eddie’s passing stopped the project before it could be completed. What’s missing, he said, is a vocalist and the finishing touches — the “glue” that would bring everything together.

“Most of ’em is Wolf [Wolfgang Van Halen, Eddie’s son and former Van Halen bassist], because these are recordings that were made ready for the next record,” Alex Van Halen said.

He and Eddie Van Halen created a lot of unreleased music, but he refused to put it out in an unfinished state. He explained that any posthumous release must meet the same high standards the band always had. To ensure that quality, Alex is working with Eddie’s close friend Steve Lukather to carefully complete a potential record that truly reflects where Eddie left off creatively.

“Well, these are recordings that were going to be the next [Van Halen] record, and that were stopped because [Ed] didn’t live that long,” he continued. “The drums are already recorded. The drums, the guitar and the bass are already in there. What we didn’t have is a vocalist, and obviously the subtleties and the glue — we call it the glue or the spackle.”
