Famous Grunge Guitarist Reveals If STP & Alice In Chains Playing With New Singers Is Appropriate

Blind Melon guitarist Christopher Thorn was asked about Stone Temple Pilots carrying on with their new singer Jeff Gutt after the deaths of Scott Weiland and Chester Bennington in a new Appetite For Distortion podcast interview. Alternative Nation transcribed Thorn’s comments.

“I would say ultimately, it’s so easy these days on the internet to just judge every fuckin’ body. But you can’t judge those guys, you don’t know the pain they’re going through. Let me tell you something, the first thing you want to do is be around your brothers when you have that pain.

So I get that those Stone Temple Pilots guys are like, ‘Let’s just find a singer and get back to what we do. This is what we fuckin’ do. It makes us feel good, I want to be around my brothers.’ That’s a part of their healing process, so you can’t judge them for doing out and doing it.

Trust me, I guarantee you they wish Scott was around, but he’s not, so at a certain point you’ve got to go on. If that’s what makes you feel good, that’s what you’ve got to do.”

He also discussed Alice In Chains carrying on with William DuVall replacing Layne Staley.

“He’s fuckin’ amazing. I saw the show, and I was like, I love these songs, I want to hear these songs. Jerry is a God, and he’s fucking the shit, and I want to see Jerry and these guys play these songs.”

Thorn also said that when Blind Melon reformed in 2006 with Travis Warren replacing their late singer Shannon Hoon, it wasn’t about the money. He said if they were doing it for the money, they would have carried on shortly after Hoon’s death in 1995, and that he actually took a large pay cut from his job in the music industry when Blind Melon reunited.

Life is for the living; can’t stop doing what you love just because someone you love is dead.

Alice In Chains and STP are a little different than just switching singers after their lead singer died.

Alice In Chains still has the singer that was lead on half of their songs, and the writer of almost everything. They also handled things in a very classy way too, even giving Layne’s mother money. The tribute they gave in the songs (especially the song Black Gives Way To Blue) was perfect. The new singer is also original, not a clone.

STP is different because Scott wasn’t in the band any more. Personally I think their singer search was an embarrassment the way they dragged it out, made it public, etc. but they were already continuing, the death was unrelated. Judge them for changing singers, not because their singer died. He didn’t. He wasn’t their singer when he died.

Get your facts straight! Jerry sang harmony on most (original) AIC songs, and only lead on a few. While he did write most of the music and some lyrics, Layne wrote the words to almost all their early stuff. Many, many interviews talk about how the band would give Layne some riffs and he’d come up with the lyrics and harmonies, which I’d say is a huge part of the songwriting.

I agree. The people that say they should quit are people that aren’t going to the shows anyway. The people who want to see them aren’t complaining. Do it for the fans and the love of music.

I absolutely despise the so called fans of these bands that say they cant stand the new singer because he isnt the one they fell in love with. Layney had his time, and he moved on, scott too. If they were really fans, theyd have moved on too, and enjoy the fact that the band they like still exists and is making more music to enjoy. I loved Layne and Scott too, dammit, but there comes a time where you just have to grow up.

LOVE Shannon Hoon he self destructed like Layne & Scott. Such AMAZING GIFTED MUSICIANS!!! Shannon passed so young Layne held out for awhile & Scott lived longer than alot thought he would.

I totally agree with Christopher. Both Layne and Scott were not in their respective bands when they passed. And if we get personal about it, Scott wasn’t wanted and Layne didn’t want to. So at the end of the day man, life goes on. And the other guys in those bands fucking earned the right and paid their dues and put in the work and made a name for themselves, literally, people recognize STP and AIC, why should they use a diff name. That’s like starting over, and they’re all professional musicians, who fucking earned they’re recognition and for people to say that they shouldn’t use the names cuz the original singer is gone, is just ridiculous. Same guys playing same instruments? Same band
