Legendary Grunge photographer Kevin Westenberg described ‘naughtiness’ and the story behind an iconic photo on the Lollapalooza 1992 tour in a new Instagram post.

“PEARL JAM LIVE. LOLLAPALOOZA. BREMERTON. WASH. Photo: Kevin Westenberg. Black Friday Special. My 4th ‘no-tone’ photo release. Another one of my most requested images. Printed using Da Vinci Fibre Gloss Silk heavyweight archival white 310gsm acid free cotton rag natural white base baryta ink jet paper. Currently only available in this 1 size only : Print size 2, shown here has an IMAGE size of 16″x20″ and is an edition of only 18 (+2 A/P) signed and numbered prints. Print is centered on a sheet of 24”x28” size paper. Westenberg Ltd covers shipping cost. Once these are all gone, that’s the end. Contact me direct for pricing at: kjwestenberg@hotmail.com

The Backstory: I was covering this second year of the LOLLAPALOOZA tour for the Melody Maker but also for SOUNDGARDEN. This was 1992 and both SG and PEARL JAM were still in their infancy. The fun years. The other bands this summer also included the RHCP, Ministry, Ice Cube, the Jesus and Mary Chain and Lush. Big Party back before video Smart Phones and all the other intrusive monitoring devices that modern day musicians have to deal with. Naughtiness ensues with little recourse. The hair was long and the shorts were baggy. Pure Grunge. This shot was just an accident as usually shooting at big events with even bigger stages means you get nothing but the obligatory shot of the back of some rock stars head and the crowd. Ho hum. If EDDIE hadn’t momentarily leant all his weight on Jeff Ament in this way and I was a foot or two to either side, none of this would have worked. Luck be a lady tonight. Also if I remember correctly this photo was made into a poster which sold a couple hundred thousand. Now finally, this is available and overseen by me as a very limited edition large format proper limited edition print run. #kevinwestenberg #realfilmrealwestenberg #lollapalooza #pearljam #pearljamlive #eddievedder #jeffament #bremerton #liverock #soundgarden #fiveagainstone #bw #blackandwhite #thegreatest #classic.”
